Gallantry Awards Announced By President On Independence Day

On the occasion of Independence day President Pranabh Mukherjee has announced the Gallantry Awards for the meritorious service in the police department.

President Pranabh Mukherjee has announced the Gallantry Awards and posthumously awarded the police medals to the policemen for their meritorious service in the department.

824 police personnel were been awarded with the medals. Four were awarded President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, 149 Police receives Medal for Gallantry, 76 President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and 595 were awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service out of this 824 persons.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was conferred 11 police medals, the Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) nine while the Special Protection Group (SPG) got three awards.

A Kirti Chakra, a Shaurya Chakra and five Sena Medals in the Independence Day gallantry awards were awarded to the crack Army Special Forces team which conducted the cross-border surgical strike against Northeastern insurgents inside Myanmar.

Besides two Kirti Chakras, there were 10 Shaurya Chakras, one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 49 Sena Medals (Gallantry), two Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and three Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).

Lt-Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam of 21 Para-SF,Shaurya Chakra to his name, was awarded the Kirti Chakra which is the second highest peacetime gallantry medal for the commando operation.

Major Prashant Yadav, Lieutenant Krishan Kant, Havildar Raj Bahadur Tamang, and Naiks Manoj Kumar and Bhupinder Singh received Sena medals. Shaurya Chakra was awarded to Havildar Tanka Kumar Limbu. The highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, was not awarded this year.

CBI joint director M.M. Oberoi was among six officials who received President`s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Border Security Force (BSF) constable Sanjay Dhar was posthumously awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.

Flight Lieutenant Gandikota Jagan Mohan has given the Vayu Sena medal for operating in tense conditions at Chumar’s Pt 4991, the control of which means a firm hold over 480sqkm of disputed border area.
