Aizawl (mizonews.net): The International Day Against Drug Abuse And illicit Trafficking 2012 was observed in Mizoram on Tuesday along with the rest of the world.
Earlier in the day Chief Minister Lalthanhawla addressing the people via Doordarshan said: “Drugs and alcohol abuse has been quite a social norm in every part of the world today and ultimately the UN taking serious note on the issue first started to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking since 1969.”
He also pointed out that different measures being taken up to tackle the menace of drug abuse by various NGOs and the government agencies in the state was “not satisfactory” as the rate of drug users is now alarmingly increasing in the state.
Home minister Lalzirliana said that the main objective “is to eradicate drug abusers and illicit drug traffickers. The day is being observed amidst a big question in the air on whether it will be possible to solve the problem of drug abuse which is in an ever increasing rate.”
The main event was was held at Vanapa Hall and it was presided by Social Welfare Department secretary B. Sairengpuii and Home minister R. Lalzirliana took part as chief guest.
International Day Against Drug Abuse And illicit Trafficking is observed by the United Nations General Assembly special session since 1987 across the world. This year theme is “Think Health- Not Drugs”.
