No Need Of Police Verification For The Passport Renewal :
Minister of State External Affairs VK Singh said that police verification is not needed for the re issue of passport provided that the first passport had been issued on the basis of a clear police verification. The applicants who are facing delay due to the mandatory police verification for the renewal of the old passport can now relax with this decision.
Minors, Govt. servants, senior citizens are exempted from the police verification as per the present provisions. The decision will drastically cut down the time that is taken to re issue a passport. The renewal of passport after police verification will take upto 20 days which can now be decreased by more than half of it.
However the home ministry is working on making the police verification process online country wide which will drastically cut down the time that is required to issue the passport. This project will be likely launched from Bangalore in November.
Whereas access to the databases of population register, Aadhaar and the crime and criminal tracking network system will be given to the heads of the district police SP or DCP for the purpose of online verification of identity, address and criminal record if any of the applicant.
VK Singh said, “It is a fact that with the overall improvement in delivery of passport services, the incidence of Tatkaal passport is coming down progressively from 11 per cent in 2012-13 to six per cent in 2014-15. However, there is no proposal to discontinue Tatkaal system, as it serves the purpose of issuing passports for urgent travel needs. “
