’193 men jailed on charges of rape’

Aizawl, (mizonews.net): According to the latest Statistical Abstract of Mizoram, the total number of inmates in different jails across the state during 2010-11 is 6,436, out of which 3019 were convicted for violation of the prohibition of liquor law called the MLTP Act.

Notably, during the same period, 6,443 inmates were set free.

As per the data of the total 6,436 convicts, 5,255 are male and 1,181 are women; and of the released 6,443 persons, 5,244 are male, and 1,199 are female.

Of the total 6,436, 2,147 male and 872 female were jailed for violation of MLTP Act during 2010-2011; whereas 1,893 male and 46 female were jailed on theft case in the same year. On the other hand, 193 male were jailed on rape charges. Another 136 male were jailed for murder case but there were no females jailed for this category. However during the last decade, 2001 – 2010, there had always been females convicted for murder.

The data also pointed out that 796 (670 male and 126 male) were jailed for violation of Excise Act; 466 (299 male 167 and female) for ND&PS Act; 385 (272 male and 113 female) for ADC Act; 65 (62 male and 3 female) under IPC Section 188; 79 (77male and 2 female) for ambush; 83 (82 male and 1 female) under Arms Act.

The age group 26-30 figured the highest number from the total convicts during 2010-11- 1,570 male and 295 female; whereas there are 802 male and 112 female in the age group 18-20; 1,389 male and 163 male in the age group 21-25; 1,263 male and 319 in the age group 31-35; 838 male and 344 female in the age group 36-45; and there are 298 male and 97 female above 45 years.
