18 killed in Mizoram bus accident

Aizawl (mizonews.net): At least 18 people were killed and 18 others injured when a private night bus, ZK Travels, which was comping from Champhai to Aizawl skidded off the Aizawl- Champhai National Highway and rolled down into a deep gorge in Keifang.

The bus fell 300 metre below into Keifang quarry around 12:40 pm on Friday night, sources said.

Among the 18 injured, some of them were in critical condition.

On learning the mishap, Home Minister R .Lalzirliana, transport minister PC Zoramsangliana, excise minister JH Rothuama and MLA T.T Zothansanga visited the spot to take stock of the situation.

Besides the local people of Keifang and Saitual villages, adjoining villagers from Rulchawm , Ruallung and Sihfa joined the rescue operation.

The injured passengers and bodies of those killed in the mishap have been brought to Aizawl Civil Hospital by the police.

MAJOR ACCIDENTS IN MIZORAM

Mizoram State Transport bus bearing registration number MZ 01/G-9083 met with an accident near Darlawn on March 3, 2012. It was carrying 39 passenger who were on their way to Vaitin from Aizawl. Sixteen people died.

On January  10, 2012, a mini bus carrying 50 passenger met with an accident between Putlungasih and Lunglei claiming 7 lives while injuring 43.

On December 11, 2010, a night bus plying between Aizawl and Champhai had a tragic accident near Dulte village killing 8 passenger on the spot and 34 injured.

On July 7, 1981, Mizoram State Transport bus bearing registration number ZRX-82 met with an accident near Kawnpui killing 34 people. This is the most tragic accident so far in Mizoram.
