6 pro-quota Mizo women councillors stage walk out

Aizawl (mizonews.net): Six women from the Aizawl Municipal Council (AMC) staged a walk out on Saturday soon after the council passed a resolution not to create reservation of seats for the fairer sex  in the local council.

During discussion, the women said that if the resolution for reservation of seats for women cannot be taken up “there is no point of their participation in the Aizawl Municipal Council session”.

However, majority of the members were of the opinion that, reservation of seats for women have been given in AMC and Ward Committee, which they felt was enough.

“Moreover, since the Local Council has not complete even one term, it is too early to give a reservation for women,” the majority of the members opined.

Meanwhile, the resolution put up by MPC member Rosiamngheta that the grant given by 13th Finance Commission to Urban Local Body be utilised for Ward Committee and Local Council too, was accepted in the session.

AMC Accounts Secretary PC Lalhmingthanga also tabled the Municipal Council Committee report which suggests checking some overtly high expenditure and to reduce the high expenditure on transportation.

The report also suggest for proper utilisation of the remaining balance of the fund received from Finance Commission in 2011-2012 which amounted to about Rs. 50 lakhs.

Besides, the Municipal Council Committee report also suggests for preparation of Quarterly Report which shall be circulated to all the Councillors.
