Mizoram introduces System of Rice Intensification

Aizawl (mizonews.net): In a bid to promote agriculture in the state, Mizoram Agriculture Department has launched a training progamme on new system of rice cultivation called System of Rice Intensification (SRI).

The training is imparted to the farmers from different districts.

“The new system has been introduced in order to bring more produce of agriculture in the state,” officials said.

Experts from District Agriculture Office (DAO), Aizawl and Directorate of Agriculture gave detail instructions to farmers of Dihmunzawl which lies  between Aizawl and  Tlawng. The areas is owned by Kaphliri  and the other areas near Sairang road is owned by Kapzela.

Reports added that on 12.7.2012, Lalthanzuala, SMS (Agronomy) and Tlangtimawia Zote, Insecticide Analyst, along with Agriculture Director, Dr. C. Lalzarliana visited the paddy field at Dihmunzawla owned by Kaphliri & family where paddy has been cultivated using System of Rice Intensification (SRI); they showed to the farmers how to plant the paddy at 10 inches of space, using marker; and also instructed the farmer, the proper method of watering;  and how a huge product could be yield through the use of  SRI had been explained to the farmers at the visited paddy field itself.

Reports further said that the Agriculture Department will be continuing its guidance programme on System of Rice Intensification throughout the year.
