Mizoram lawyers protest against ‘anti-lawyer’ bill

Aizawl (mizonews.net): The Mizoram Bar Association yesterday burnt copies of the proposed ‘The Higher Education and Research Bill, 2011′ and other proposed legislations by the Centre during the two-day “cessation of work” called by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The lawyers staged their protest here in front of the Aizawl civil court complex joining their counterparts in other parts of the country.

The strike has crippled judicial works since yesterday.

Meanwhile, lawyers in Delhi gathered at Jantar Mantar in protest against the proposed legislation which they said “will harm the autonomy of the BCI and its members.”

“Foreign colleges, foreign solicitor firms and lawyers from other countries would be allowed to work in India,” they said adding that the Centre was trying constitute a body to regulate the Bar Council of India, which will enable the ruling political leaders to influence the judiciary.
