Jaipur: Over 80 people involved in illegal mining were arrested in Rajasthan by a team of police, forest and revenue department officers Thursday, police said.
According to the police, the raids were carried out at illegally operated gravel mines in Pahari police station area of Bharatpur district, some 200 km from Jaipur.
“We had been receiving complaints of illegal mining in the area for some time. After preparing a strategy, a team of about 400 policemen and employees of forest and revenue departments surrounded the hilly area Thursday,” said Bharatpur’s Superintendent of Police Vikar Kumar.
He added that after identifying the illegal mines, those who were found working there were detained. Several of them managed to flee.
“These people have been booked under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code and are being interrogated. We are trying to identify those who employed them. They will also be booked,” said the officer.
